Up until I started working with Coach Rich, I wouldn’t consider doing a triathlon with an open water swim.  In Dallas, we have a lot of sprint distance triathlons that utilize pool swims.  There’s something very comforting about the clear chlorinated water and following the blue line.

I’m now signed up for an Olympic distance race in Galveston in April 2010 with an open water swim.  I know I will have the skills, stamina and knowledge to make it through my first open water race.  Coach Rich has analyzed my swim stroke and provided me with drills to improve my efficiency.  In addition, I’m practicing open water skills such as sighting and swimming straight.   If you think you swim straight, try swimming a length with your eyes closed – just be sure you’re not sharing the lane.

I’ve really enjoyed the variety of bike and running workouts too.  Lately we’ve emphasized my running as I’m preparing for the Rock n Roll Half Marathon in Las Vegas.  Coach Rich has adapted my training after I caught the flu from my children.  Despite being sick, I am ready for the race.

I’m looking forward to adding more biking to my schedule after Vegas.
